BMI pelvic floor assessment and diagnosis

BMI pelvic floor treatment begins with two appointments, arranged at times to suit you, with a BMI women’s health physiotherapist with specialist training to fully assess your condition.

During your first appointment you will be able to discuss your bladder problem in full including your symptoms and how it affects your lifestyle. All BMI pelvic floor treatment physiotherapists are women who are highly trained in the field of continence. Your discussions will be in confidence and you will be treated with respect and dignity throughout, so you should not feel embarrassed.

Your women's health physiotherapist will take the time to listen and understand your condition. She will ask lots of questions about your work, exercise, lifestyle and your medical history so that she has as much information as possible to begin planning your treatment with you.

At your second appointment you will be offered a physical examination to establish the position and current strength of your pelvic floor muscles. A physical examination will enable your physiotherapist to tailor your exercise programme to your specific muscle strength and endurance. She will be able to tell you if you are using the correct muscles by feeling the pelvic floor as you exercise. This is important, as it has been found that fewer than half of women perform pelvic floor exercises correctly if they are only given verbal or written instructions.

The examination will also help her decide if other treatment options would be helpful. These may be offered at follow on appointments with your BMI physiotherapist or, if other specialist treatment or diagnosis is required, you may be offered a referral to a consultant within your BMI hospital.

Exercise plan

If it is appropriate, during your second appointment you will be given a tailor made exercise plan. This will consist of exercises designed specifically for you by your women's health physiotherapist to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.

Follow on appointments

You will be able to book further appointments with your women's health physiotherapist in blocks of four. During these she will be able to see how your pelvic floor strength is improving, and will adjust and develop your exercise programme as your muscle function improves.

BMI pelvic floor treatment has been developed to give you fast and direct access to assessment and treatment , whether or not you have private medical insurance. For information on the cost of appointments for BMI pelvic floor treatment, see our pages on prices.
